15/09/2017 - OCAL-ALCO: Regional Meeting about Road Safety Management on the Abidjan Lagos corridor

On 7 and 8 of September 2017, the National Road Safety Centre of Benin hosted a Regional Meeting of experts on Road Safety in the Abidjan-Lagos corridor organized by OCAL (Organisation du Corridor Abidjan-Lagos). The meeting brought together experts from Côte d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Togo, Ghana, Benin and France and it gave them the possibility to discuss and start to harmonize road safety policies in the countries of the Abidjan- Lagos.

According to the executive secretary of OCAL, Koné Idrissa, "every year, road accidents cause 1.25 million deaths worldwide and more than 300,000 people on African roads . They are the leading cause of death among young people aged 15-29. "

Indeed, the main objective of this meeting was the reduction of the number of road traffic accidents on the Abidjan-Lagos corridor by harmonizing road safety policies and strategies.

Furthermore, this meeting was also an opportunity for the participants to present the experiences of each country in the organization and management of road safety; to exchange around the regulation and the security measure at local and national level; to examine the current methods used by each country to locate road accidents and propose innovative methods for their improvement; to identify regional activities to be carried out at the level of the five countries of the Abidjan-Lagos corridor.
